Lecture notes on Terence, ca. 1858.

Ernst von Leutsch's handwritten notes for lectures he gave on Terence at the University of Göttingen. Among the many bibliographical references with dates, the latest date found was 1858. The manuscript is comprised of individual gatherings of leaves, mostly unnumbered, and the original or intended order is uncertain. One section of gatherings, numbered 1 to 10, is entitled Introduction to the Adelphi of Terence; there follow three subheadings: on the outer circumstances of Rom at the time of the play's performance; the inner situation of Rome; and Latin literature of that time. A second section of gatherings (unnumbered) begins with the heading Life of Terence: sources. The remaining portion of the manuscript contains two additional headings, the first is: Festivals of the Romans associated with the performance of drama; that gathering is numbered 27, while all the others are unnumbered. The other heading is: The composition of the comedies of Terence.
